Trump Hints at 20-25% Tariff on India, Says Trade Deal Still Under Negotiation

Washington (Web Desk)
– U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that India may face tariffs ranging from 20% to 25%, although he clarified that the final decision has not yet been made as trade negotiations between the two countries are still ongoing.

“I think so,” Bloomberg quoted Trump on Tuesday when asked if such a tariff rate is being considered for India.

Speaking aboard Air Force One while returning from a five-day visit to Scotland, Trump said, “India has been a good friend, but it has imposed more tariffs than nearly any other country. You just can’t do that.”

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer also weighed in during an interview with CNBC on Monday, stating that more discussions are needed to finalize a trade agreement with India.

“They have shown strong interest in opening parts of their market,” Greer said, as quoted by CNN. “We’re ready to continue talking, but we need to see how ambitious our Indian friends are willing to be.”

President Trump has made it a key priority to push U.S. trade partners, including India, to reduce trade barriers and open their markets to American products.

The proposed tariffs come as part of broader efforts by the U.S. administration to address what it considers unfair trade practices and rebalance global trade.

Negotiations are continuing ahead of the August 1 deadline, but no final agreement has been reached yet.
