Pakistan’s U-18 Asia Cup Hockey Dream Shattered as Japan Clinch Final with 3-0 Win

🏑 Japan Dominates Final to Crush Pakistan’s U-18 Asia Cup Hockey Hopes

Dazhou, China – Pakistan’s under-18 men’s hockey team saw their Asia Cup 2025 dream end in heartbreak as Japan outplayed them in the final, winning the match 3-0 and securing the prestigious youth title.

Despite an impressive unbeaten run in the tournament, the green shirts couldn’t withstand Japan’s attacking prowess in the final played on Sunday.

🇯🇵 Fujiwara Shines as Japan Outclasses Pakistan

The final saw Yuma Fujiwara score twice — in the 22nd and 38th minutes — putting Japan in control. Later, Tatsuaki Yasui converted a penalty corner in the 49th minute to seal the result at 3-0, leaving Pakistan with the silver medal.

Pakistan struggled to penetrate Japan’s solid defense and couldn’t convert chances when it mattered most. The match marked Japan’s dominance and technical edge over a spirited Pakistani side.

🏆 Pakistan’s Unbeaten Run Before the Final

The Pakistani team entered the final with high morale, having remained undefeated throughout the tournament until the final showdown.

  • In the semi-final, Pakistan defeated Malaysia in a nail-biting penalty shootout (4-3) after a 3-3 draw in regular time.

  • Before that, they edged out hosts China 2-1 to qualify for the semis.

  • Their pool stage performance included dominant wins over:

    • Bangladesh (6-3)

    • Sri Lanka (9-0)

    • Hong Kong (8-0)

📉 Recent Setbacks for Pakistan Hockey

This loss adds to a series of recent disappointments for Pakistan hockey. Just last month, the senior team lost to New Zealand 6-2 in the final of the FIH Nations Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. That defeat cost them a direct entry to the FIH Pro League.

The under-18 team’s defeat in Dazhou now raises questions about consistency in crucial matches despite promising performances.

🛡️ Pakistan Reviewing Security for Upcoming Events in India

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s participation in upcoming international events in India hangs in the balance due to security concerns.

According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), the Pakistan government is evaluating the security situation before deciding whether to send national teams to India.

Pakistan is scheduled to take part in the:

  • Asia Cup (August 27 – September 7) in Rajgir, Bihar

  • FIH Junior World Cup (November–December) in Chennai

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has reportedly sought government clearance for both events. A top government official stated, “If there is any threat to the players’ safety, we will not send the team to India.”
