Pakistan Urges Emission Cuts, Climate Finance at COP-29 in Azerbaijan

Pakistan Pushes for Global Climate Justice at COP-29

Musadik Malik Calls for Emission Reductions and Resilience Funding

At the COP-29 Heads of Delegation Retreat in Shamakhi, Azerbaijan, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, called for urgent global action to reduce carbon emissions and support vulnerable countries through climate finance.

In bilateral meetings with Mukhtar Babayev, President of COP-29 and Special Envoy on Environment to the President of Azerbaijan, and Yalchin Rafiyev, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister and COP-29 Lead Negotiator, Dr. Malik stressed the disproportionate impact of climate change on developing countries.

He highlighted that while the Global South, including Pakistan, bears the brunt of climate disasters, the Global North remains the primary source of both historical and present-day greenhouse gas emissions. Malik emphasized that developed countries must take the lead in deep emission cuts and deliver on their climate finance pledges.

Pakistan’s Climate Vulnerability

Malik noted that Pakistan, geographically positioned between two of the world’s top carbon emitters, faces compounded climate risks such as floods, heatwaves, and glacial melt. He urged the international community to treat climate change as a shared global challenge that transcends borders.

Strengthening Pakistan-Azerbaijan Green Partnership

During the meetings, Pakistan and Azerbaijan explored avenues for bilateral cooperation in the green economy, including:

  • Renewable energy development

  • Climate-smart agriculture

  • Disaster risk reduction

  • Adaptation strategies

Dr. Malik reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to multilateral climate diplomacy and expressed optimism that COP-29 will pave the way for science-based, inclusive, and just climate solutions.
