KUALA LUMPUR: Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, aged 100, was admitted to the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur due to fatigue, his office confirmed on Sunday.
The incident occurred shortly after Mahathir left a birthday picnic celebration early. His office stated that his condition is stable, and he is expected to return home later the same day.
🎉 Birthday Event Cut Short Due to Tiredness
Mahathir had attended a joint birthday event that also marked the 99th birthday of his wife, Dr. Hasmah Mohamad Ali. According to local media reports, the former PM even cycled for nearly an hour during the morning festivities. However, he appeared visibly tired and left the event early for medical observation.
❤️ Long History of Heart-Related Health Issues
The former leader has a well-documented history of cardiac problems. He has undergone multiple bypass surgeries and has been hospitalised several times in recent years. In October, he was admitted due to a respiratory infection.
Despite these issues, Mahathir has remained relatively active in public life, even driving himself to events and participating in light physical activities.
🏛️ Decades of Leadership and Public Service
Mahathir Mohamad is one of Southeast Asia’s most influential political figures. He served as Malaysia’s Prime Minister from 1981 to 2003, making him the country’s longest-serving leader. He made a political comeback in 2018, leading the opposition to a historic win. However, his second term lasted less than two years due to internal party conflicts.
A physician by profession, Mahathir served not only as a political leader but also as a policy reformer, driving major changes in Malaysia’s economic and industrial sectors.

Mahathir’s current hospitalisation has sparked public concern, but his office reassured the nation that he is resting well and recovering. “He is under observation due to fatigue, but we expect him to return home by this evening,” the official statement read.
