1. New Lake Threatens Catastrophic Floods in Gilgit-Baltistan

A massive mudslide in northern Pakistan has blocked the Ghizer River, forming a 7-kilometer-long lake that poses a serious risk of overflow. Authorities warn of possible flash floods affecting downstream districts including Ghizer, Gilgit, Astore, and Diamer. Early evacuations saved around 200 people, and although the lake has started draining, the flood threat remains until the blockage is cleared.

2. National Campaign Launched Against River Encroachments

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a nationwide initiative to halt illegal construction along rivers, streams, and natural water channels. This comes as the floods and rains since late June have claimed 788 lives across Pakistan. The campaign aims to strengthen natural drainage systems and prevent future disaster risks.

3. PCB Chief Clarifies on Star Players’ Omission

Mohsin Naqvi, Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, addressed the uproar over the exclusion of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from the upcoming Asia Cup and UAE tri-series squads. He stressed that he had no role in the selection process, which was handled entirely by the selectors.  

4. Pakistan Will Not “Beg” for Cricket Against India

In a firm stance ahead of major cricketing events, PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi declared that Pakistan will no longer “beg” for bilateral matches with India. The upcoming Asia Cup clash on September 14 and the Women’s ODI World Cup match on October 5 are set to proceed under this new assertion of dignity and respect.
